I have just read a little book on the English language called The Elements of Style by Strunk and White based on an original manuscript by Strunk written before 1919. Rules of English usage are laid out as commandments – concise, clear and unequivocal.
“Place a comma before a conjunction introducing an independent clause.”
I have no idea what it means but I like its certainty, its forcefulness, its confidence. The whole book is written in a voice that must be obeyed.
“Do not dress words up by adding -ly to them, as though putting a hat on a horse.”
What a joy!
